Even Romantics Love Violence
A Solo Show by Hellbent

What happens when you take a step out of your comfort zone and explore something new?  Do you get excited and filled with adventure?  Or perhaps you grow frustrated, trying to find your way back to familiar surroundings?  We all react differently in the face of adversity.  Therein lies the challenge of adapting to untested techniques in order to create a fresh and bold style of artwork.  This sort of personal struggle ushers in a period of mental evolution, where one sheds away a tried process and adapts to something more profound and relevant.  Mighty Tanaka is excited to bring you our next show, Even Romantics Love Violence, featuring the deconstructed abstractions by NYC Street Art powerhouse, Hellbent.  Over the years, he has honed a distinct style on the streets of New York City, however now he looks to spread his wings and share the dynamic new directions he is taking his art.

Even Romantics Love Violence captures the everlasting movement and definition of Hellbent’s flowing geometric abstractions.  In his latest body of work, Hellbent departs from his typical subject matter and reinterprets his work by juxtaposing patterns and colors in such a way that creates an eye catching effect that plays with ones perception and dimension.  His color pallet and experimental technique creates a fluid motion effect which envelops the canvas.  The opposing and complimenting virtues of his artwork gives it a voice to be reckoned with.

Hellbent’s latest series in Even Romantics Love Violence reflects his natural ingenuity and resourcefulness, as he looks beyond his typical materials and explores new inventive methods.  This re-imagined process incorporates a fresh vision that pushes the boundaries of street art, adding beautiful abstractions to both the gallery walls and the urban environment.

Seeing Double
Featuring the artwork of Ellen Stagg & Hiroshi Kumagai

Spring is in the air.  The sun is out and a warm breeze gently blows through the newly budding trees.  It is a time to rejoice, as the world reawakens to the sunshine after a long winters nap.  Springtime allows us the freedom to release the shackles of a cold and dark winter and gifts us the ability to be completely rejuvenated within an upbeat new world.  Yet, as the flowers rise once again to meet the changing climate, so does our pulse with the temptation of desire.  Restrictive clothing is shed and the essence of pheromones drifts through the air and entices the soul.  We are reawakened to the most instinctual of desires, that of eroticism and temptation.  Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you a sexy new show for the Spring called Seeing Double, featuring the tantalizing photography of Ellen Stagg and the captivating vinyl work of Hiroshi Kumagai.  Together, these two artists are sure to blow your mind.

Seeing Double pairs two erotic art powerhouses side by side within this uninhibited exhibition.  Mutually influenced by one another, both Ellen Stagg and Hiroshi Kumagai represent different approaches to analog art, as they each represent a unique perspective to the erotic art form.  Together, they create an abstract realism that plays with the senses and invigorates new ideas within the interpretation of the art form.

Ellen Stagg and Hiroshi Kumagai utilize a number of techniques to achieve a low-fi medium within a digital age.  From the lens of a Lomokino camera that mirrors the grainy qualities of the Super 8 home movies to the steady hand and exact nature of precisely executed vinyl work, Seeing Double displays the qualities and flexibility of the way we choose to interpret eroticism and the ability to expresses ourselves.

The Subliminal & Sublime

Featuring the art of Fedele Spadafora & Jeff Faerber

Subliminal ideas are constantly being introduced to us through a variety of methods.  Television, media and advertising are all guilty of producing schemes in order to infiltrate our brains and insert their message.  Through a system of repetition and constant exposure, we are powerless to the jingles and catch phrases that surround us in daily life.  As much as we may try to ignore it, the fact remains that major advertisers are tuned into our subconsciousness and exploiting it at will.  Messages of morality, faith, consumption, fear and shame are just some of the ideas that we are being fed on a daily basis.  Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you our next show, The Subliminal & Sublime, featuring the thought provoking artwork of Fedele Spadafora & Jeff Faerber.  Together, they attempt to deconstruct the subversive nature of the subliminal and interpret it in a new light.

The Subliminal & Sublime explores the notion of memory and the means of individual interpretation.  Utilizing the suggestive power of symbolism, Fedele Spadafora & Jeff Faerber delve into the inner most sanctum of the mind and withdraw an evolving idea of self.  They present a juxtaposing idea of the subconscious, comparing and contrasting the subject from different angles while achieving a common goal.

Fedele Spadafora & Jeff Faerber present a complimentary and unique style of painting that invites the viewer to take a step closer.  Using a variety of techniques, The Subliminal & Sublime digs deep to reinterpret our perception of memory and present an eclectic view of the world around us.

Fountain Art Fair NYC, March 8th – 10th

February 28th, 2013

Beginning on Friday, March 8th, we will be embarking on another exciting, art fueled weekend during the Fountain Art Fair.  This year, we will be celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Armory Show, which featured many of the worlds most recognized artists from the era, such as Duchamp, Picasso, Hopper, Matisse, Cézanne and many others.  We are excited and humbled to be exhibiting the artwork of the 21st Century within the hallowed walls of such a historic building.

This year, we will be exhibiting the amazing artwork of 15 talented individuals who represent a duality within the raw and the refined, which is the theme of Mighty Tanaka.    We will highlight a variety of disciplines and techniques in order to demonstrate the range and breadth of this inspiring moment in art.  Showing both Street Art and Fine Art side by side, we look to present both forms of art on a level playing field, exemplifying the qualities of both art forms and the way they compliment one another.

Furthermore, we are happy to announce that we will be curating the Street Art section of the art fair alongside the talented artist collective know as Robots Will Kill.  Together, we have come up with a list of 20 street artists who will paint large size murals on canvas to be hung from the rafters in the armory.  Street art has always been a staple of the Fountain Art Fair and to have the opportunity to curate it during the 100 year anniversary of the Armory Show is an honor.

DON’T MAKE ME count to three!
An installation by Nathan Vincent

Power structures exist all around us and influence every level of society. Because of this, roles have been established and appointed, creating a modern caste system which envelopes the culture in which we live. As an ever changing system of rewards and punishments has been implemented, the ruling elite keep a proverbial carrot on a stick, forever luring the disenfranchised to obedience and passivity. Throughout history, the benefactors of these frameworks have used tools to reinforce this control, as weapons have become the most iconic interpretation of power and intimidation. Mighty Tanaka is excited to bring you our next show, DON’T MAKE ME count to three!, an installation by Nathan Vincent, which explores the juxtaposition between the traditional roles of society that have been passed down through the generations and the fear of consequences when stepping out of line.

DON’T MAKE ME count to three! references an authoritative form of power and relationships while invoking the repercussions of disobedience. According to the artist, Nathan Vincent:

“We tacitly enter into these societal agreements and fall into power structures without consideration of whether it is truly in our best interest. It’s not until you question those structures that you realize the consequences of disobedience can sometimes be ridiculously insignificant.”

Nathan Vincent has created an accumulative installation featuring an assortment of fiber-made “explosives”; virtual weaponry crocheted by hand that represents the confines of society and our ability to break out of the mold.

Vis-á-Vis
Featuring the artwork of Tony DePew, Toofly & Quelbeast

Everyone is unique.  From the moment we take our first breath to the moment we take our last, there resides a remarkable spark of individuality that exists in each and every one of us.  The ways in which we each choose to outwardly express ourselves may vary greatly, yet we all must embrace the differences that separate us all.  It’s been said that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, however, it is the expressions of the face that communicate another’s thoughts and desires.  Therein lies the magic of portraits, a method that provides a visual communication with the subject, who has been captured within a moment in time.  The viewer has the unique opportunity to study those feelings and emotions which have been forever captured on the face of the subject.  Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you our next show, Vis-á-Vis, featuring the artwork of Tony DePew, Toofly & Quelbeast.  Each artist represents a different interpretation of the way they choose to create portrait work.

Vis-á-Vis is an in depth look into three different examples of portrait work in Street Art.  Tony DePew, Toofly & Quelbeast each bring forth a variety of ideas in their approach to portrait work in the street.  They are constantly contributing to the overall conversation in art with their unorthodox styles, which provides a vibrancy on the street for all to enjoy.

Tony DePew, Toofly and Quelbeast each possess a vibrant pallet and a deliberate touch, which exemplifies their overall attention to detail.  Vis-á-Vis provides the viewer with an intriguing insight into the technical workings of three exciting artists.

Fountain Art Fair

December 3rd, 2012

Alexandra Pacula, Ardent Phenomenon, Oil on Canvas, 90"x108"

Come find us in Miami this week, December 6th – 9th at the Fountain Art Fair, located in the Wynwood District at 2505 North Miami Avenue!  We will be showing the work of two phenomenal artists, Alexandra Pacula and Nathan Vincent.  Both artists have gained much attention and recognition throughout the year and we are excited to be sharing the enthusiasm with you!  If you are in Miami or visiting for the art fairs, please take the time to stop by and see this great work and others!

About the Fountain Art Fair:

Fountain Art Fair’s seventh annual Miami exhibition takes place this week, December 6 – 9th, at 2505 North Miami Avenue.  Known for its tendency to take risks and thrill art revelers across the country, Fountain Art Fair showcases a dynamic platform of over 40 cutting-edge exhibitors, performance artists and musical guests adding a surprising twist to the typical Art Basel Miami Beach experience.

Receiving excellent press in advance of the exhibition, Fountain prepares to reach record attendance at this year’s installment. Eden Grey of Art Miami TV writes: “Fountain bears the namesake of Marcel Duchamp’s controversial art piece from 1917, and there is no doubt this exhibit is widely reminiscent of the ground-breaking DADA movement.  DADA challenged art just as the art at Fountain challenges the viewers. These are the artists that live art.”
