F*CK ART at the Museum of Sex

February 4th, 2012

Last month, we were approached by the Museum of Sex who asked if we could assist them with a new Street Art show called F*CK ART.  Truly honored by the invitation to be their advisor, we gladly accepted.  With only a few weeks of prep time before the show, we were fortunate enough to be able to secure some really great artists.  Bringing on internationally recognized artists such as Aiko and Miss Van, we  also reached out to some local NYC favorites like El Celso, DROID, GEN II & OZE108 of 907 Crew & Dickchicken.  Furthermore, we were able to bring on a couple of artists who have shown with Mighty Tanaka in the past, RTTP (Casual Encounters, February 2011) & JMR (Of Clouds and Something Else, April 2010).  The show also features many other recognizable names such as Mode2, Tony Bones as well as the infamous Fuck Bike by Andrew H. Shirley & William Thomas Porter.

The show is due to open on Wednesday, February 8th and run until Sunday, June 10th.

Lost & Found – Opening January 13th!

January 5th, 2012

Mighty Tanaka presents:
Lost & Found

Featuring the artwork of Adam Void, Alice Mizrachi, Curtis Readel, ELLE & John Breiner

Look around you; the world is full of art.  We all know the saying, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”, however, some individuals choose to take that phrase to heart.  Artists from a range of disciplines utilize a world of scattered debris, creating an array of striking creations from the items that many people would find worthless.  Mighty Tanaka is pleased to bring you our first show of 2012 entitled Lost & Found, a group show of found objects and the artwork that is created from them.  Featuring the vision of Adam Void, Alice Mizrachi, Curtis Readel, ELLE & John Breiner, each artist represents a unique idea of the world through their chosen method of creation.

Lost & Found intends to demonstrate a cross-section of aesthetic interpretation of objects that are generally taken for granted in daily life.  Artwork made from found materials provides the artist with an endless amount of inspiration, as all the necessary components are easily accessible and free to use.  This is the art of the juxtaposition, both complimenting and conflicting itself, as the work is literally born from the streets and transformed into something that is new, exciting and fresh.

Through the usage of mediums such as old beat up currency, abandoned pieces of wood, detached doors and tattered textiles, the artist is able to rebuild forgotten memories and forge them into a new identity. Lost & Found offers the viewer the opportunity to reconnect with the pieces of the past and the chance to begin anew.

Not For Prophet

November 4th, 2011

Mighty Tanaka presents:

Not For Prophet

A solo show by Poster Boy

Mighty Tanaka is back! We've moved our gallery to a new location, and we're delighted to announce our grand re-opening!

Living in a metropolis like New York City, we're constantly bombarded with a magnitude of imagery and advertisements from every angle.  The inescapable chains of consumerism tempts the mind through the guise of fake polished smiles and subconscious messages – and one artist collective is prepared to stand up to the onslaught of commercialism: Poster Boy. Armed only with a razor blade, renegade street artist Poster Boy's collage work reinterprets the advertisements around us with an ironic social commentary that teeters in the grey area of the law.

Poster Boy received international press earlier this year when a high profile solo show at Trinity College in Connecticut was canceled for potential legality issues. While the media has demonized Poster Boy’s artwork, there exists a progressive dialogue between consumer and product without the sugar-coating.   Poster Boy's artwork becomes a conduit, channeling raw emotions and frustration through a medium that is accessible for all to interpret.

Not For Prophet is an uncensored insight into the world of Poster Boy. Exhibiting an array of prints, 'zines and other iconic subject matter, the artwork is a rare peek into the mind of a true rebel.

Contemporary Abstractions
Interpretations of an Art Form

Colors, dimension, flow and definition are all words that can describe our latest show at Mighty Tanaka entitled Contemporary Abstractions, featuring the artwork of: Adam VoidDrew TyndellGreg HendersonJMRJulia Colavita & Lauren Comito.  Hosted by powerHouse Arena, in DUMBO, Brooklyn, this art show exhibits the work of six emerging artists who represent different directions and juxtaposing interpretations of Abstract art.  Contemporary Abstractions is a cross section of styles that highlight the range and breath of this established art form and aims to emphasize a variety of techniques and approaches that can be associated with the movement.
From found material sculptures and geometric design to painted canvas and tailored collages, Contemporary Abstractions features an array of complimentary talent that is pushing the bounds of an art form.  The artist’s work strives to continue the legacy established by their predecessors and to create a solid foundation for future generations to grow upon.

NY1 Interview and Segment

August 16th, 2011

***We apologize for the lack of updates as of late!  The gallery is currently in the process of moving to a new location, which will be in a much more centrally located and accessible area of DUMBO.  Even though we are in a state of transition, we are still conducting online sales from our art inventory.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions!***

In July, we were lucky enough to co-curate an art show along side producer/event coordinator Corrie Rose Zaccaria and notable artist Royce Bannon for the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival entitled Under The Influence at
powerHouse Arena.  This show, boasting 50 of the top Street Art, Graffiti, Photography and Fine Art talents from around NYC, included a book release from influential photographer Jamel Shabazz as well as large scale murals provided by the 907 Crew, Miguel Ovalle & 212 Magazine.  We are very happy to have been able to contribute to such an outstanding project and work with such great individuals!
