Not For Prophet

Mighty Tanaka presents:

Not For Prophet

A solo show by Poster Boy

Mighty Tanaka is back! We've moved our gallery to a new location, and we're delighted to announce our grand re-opening!

Living in a metropolis like New York City, we're constantly bombarded with a magnitude of imagery and advertisements from every angle.  The inescapable chains of consumerism tempts the mind through the guise of fake polished smiles and subconscious messages – and one artist collective is prepared to stand up to the onslaught of commercialism: Poster Boy. Armed only with a razor blade, renegade street artist Poster Boy's collage work reinterprets the advertisements around us with an ironic social commentary that teeters in the grey area of the law.

Poster Boy received international press earlier this year when a high profile solo show at Trinity College in Connecticut was canceled for potential legality issues. While the media has demonized Poster Boy’s artwork, there exists a progressive dialogue between consumer and product without the sugar-coating.   Poster Boy's artwork becomes a conduit, channeling raw emotions and frustration through a medium that is accessible for all to interpret.

Not For Prophet is an uncensored insight into the world of Poster Boy. Exhibiting an array of prints, 'zines and other iconic subject matter, the artwork is a rare peek into the mind of a true rebel.

Secret Wars

Secret Wars is an art battle phenomenon that has been sweeping Europe and Australia, drawing huge crowds and top notch artists.  Now they have their sights set on the USA and Mighty Tanaka has gotten on board to help establish a foundation in NYC and across the country.  The art battles encourage the artists to go big, demonstrating both street art and graffiti skills as well as illustrative qualities.  We are currently in the process of planning many more battles, stay tuned for updates!

NY1 Interview and Segment

***We apologize for the lack of updates as of late!  The gallery is currently in the process of moving to a new location, which will be in a much more centrally located and accessible area of DUMBO.  Even though we are in a state of transition, we are still conducting online sales from our art inventory.  Please feel free to contact us with any questions!***

In July, we were lucky enough to co-curate an art show along side producer/event coordinator Corrie Rose Zaccaria and notable artist Royce Bannon for the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival entitled Under The Influence at
powerHouse Arena.  This show, boasting 50 of the top Street Art, Graffiti, Photography and Fine Art talents from around NYC, included a book release from influential photographer Jamel Shabazz as well as large scale murals provided by the 907 Crew, Miguel Ovalle & 212 Magazine.  We are very happy to have been able to contribute to such an outstanding project and work with such great individuals!

Press Release:

Imagine a mystical world where your inner child plays freely amongst the flora and fauna. Immerse yourself in a place where people and animals roam freely together through the woodlands and hills. This is the tranquil world of Matt Sewell, as he brings back the dawn of the golden ages. Mighty Tanaka is proud to bring you our latest show, Ley Lady Ley, a solo show by Matt Sewell, as he transforms the gallery into his peaceful and idyllic vision.

Ley Lady Ley represents an era when people connected with Mother Earth and worshiped the land. Men and women joined in a celebration of nature and praying to the deities. Through fertility dances in oak groves and the cycle of life, death and rebirth, the artwork for Ley Lady Ley forges a sacred bond that is all but lost in modern society.

Matt Sewell has gone all out for this event, creating ten brand new works of original art on site for the show. His color pallet is warm and inviting as he takes the viewer on an inspiring journey through another time. Also including a large-scale mural on the gallery walls, his art symbolizes reconnection to the Earth and offerings to the gods.
